cassie howard- group portrait
private view – 6-8pm Thursday 16.02.12
Exhibition continues 17.02.12 – 10.03.12
the third space gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Cassie Howard. Cassie Howard makes paintings that examine the interaction of people within society and the relationship between the viewer and the viewed; her subjects are people, solitary figures but more often a group. These figures are sometimes paired with separate paintings of public objects such as park benches, sheds, and rows of trees.
Howard is interested in the role the artist has in directing the viewer. In this series of works the figures are placed within an expanse of white paper, they are turned away from the viewer and are gazing up at something which is now missing. The viewer’s social history comes into play and they are forced to fill in what is missing to compensate for this absence and uncertainty.
